Sununu Still Refusing to Join GOP Leaders Suing to Protect Health Care Coverage

In Case You Missed It, Republican Attorneys General in Ohio and Montana are the latest GOP leaders to stand up to President Trump and his efforts to strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA), contradicting Governor Sununu's recent statement that "the time to intervene has actually passed." Amid a wave of GOP leaders speaking out against Trump, Governor Chris Sununu’s health care hypocrisy continues as he stands with Trump and the far-right faction of the Republican party supporting full repeal of the ACA, leaving tens of thousands of Granite Staters without health care, especially hurting those with pre-existing conditions and those seeking substance use disorder treatment. Sununu says he wants to protect the ACA but still refuses to join the 21 states suing to actually do that and protect health care for the people of New Hampshire.

In response, NHDP Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement:

"Republicans across the country are warning that Trump's attacks on the ACA could end Medicaid expansion and take health care from millions, including tens of thousands of people here in New Hampshire, but Chris Sununu is still refusing to join the bipartisan lawsuit that would protect health care. Sununu says one thing – that he wants to protect health care – but he won't use his power to actually do that. His continued inaction and phony promises could leave tens of thousands of Granite Staters without the health care they need, and that includes people struggling with substance use disorder."

Twenty one states are leading the lawsuit to protect the Affordable Care Act and protections for pre-existing conditions, including four states with Republican Governors (Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Vermont). Governor Sununu has not directed his Attorney General to join this lawsuit, or taken literally any other action to oppose the Trump administration's efforts to end these protections, Medicaid expansion, and essential health benefits.
