Four-time failed Republican candidate Victoria Sullivan kicked off Pride Month with a bizarre tweet about how the rainbow was “given to God’s people as a sign of his covenant with us,” adding that “no group or organization can claim it for themselves.”
Sullivan, who is running for state senate against Senator Donna Soucy, responded to a post from the anti-LGBTQ+ and far-right Twitter/X account “Libs of TikTok,” whose creator is known for “peddling unfounded conspiracy theories and transphobia.” Sullivan was triggered by a picture of organizations sharing the pride flag, which incorporates the rainbow and was created in 1978 after activist Harvey Milk asked artist Gilbert Baker to design a symbol of gay pride. Each color represents a different part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Ironically, Sullivan, who took umbrage with the LGBTQ+ community claiming the rainbow, lacked the self-awareness necessary to recognize that she claimed the flag for herself only a sentence prior.
Sullivan frequently spews anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. She supports Republican legislation that bans trans youth from playing sports and would force teachers to out LGBTQ+ students to their parents, and she has repeatedly shared dangerous, anti-trans conspiracy posts on social media.
“Victoria Sullivan is well known for two things: losing elections and making unhinged and offensive attacks on New Hampshire’s LGBTQ+ community,” said NHDP Chair Ray Buckley. “As a state representative, Sullivan voted against protections for LGBTQ+ Granite Staters and backed dangerous legislation that targeted trans youth. Senator Soucy has always been a fierce ally for the LGBTQ+ community, and that’s one of the many reasons why voters will re-elect her in November and reject Sullivan again.”
