DemocraticLeader Donna Soucy, Former Speaker of the NH House Terie Norelli, and Representative Jaci Grote gathered in a virtual press conference to discuss the leaked U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade which would allow states to criminalize abortion and punish women for seeking reproductive health care. With Republicans nationwide, and right here in New Hampshire, pushing extreme anti-choice legislation, it’s more important than ever to elect Democrats who are fighting for the right to choose in the Granite State.
Read key excerpts here:
Speaker Terie Norelli:
“It’s devastating to think that in just a matter of months, we could lose Roe v. Wade and our constitutional right to bodily autonomy. Because of this, every single one of the NH GOP Senate candidates must answer for their anti-choice records. And we must continue to do everything we can from now until November to elect Democrats up and down the ticket who will protect our reproductive freedom.”
Representative Jaci Grote:
“Since 2020 when — with the help of Governor Sununu — State House Republicans were successful in passing the first abortion ban in state history, we have seen legislation from State level Republicans grow more and more extreme.”
…
“From education, to property taxes, we have seen theseHouse Republicans pull further to the right than any time before, but they have saved their most violent and extreme intentions for their legislation on women’s reproductive rights.”
Democratic Leader Sen. Donna Soucy:
“Just today, Governor Sununu said that he would sign a bill expanding reproductive rights, but this is misleading. What Governor Sununu is doing is signing a bill that lessens the extreme aspects of the abortion ban that he signed into law. Pro-choice governors don’t sign abortion bans, period.”
Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington:
“No matter what he says, Chris Sununu is not a pro-chioce governor. These Republican Executive Councilors were hand selected by him; he put Gordon McDonald on the state Supreme Court; he vetoed legislation to protect reproductive freedom; he signed the abortion ban into law. The uncertain future of women’s health in the state of New Hampshire is his doing. He has made his anti-choice agenda abundantly clear, and he is hurting Granite Staters in the process.”
NHDP Chair Ray Buckley:
“The anti-choice agenda of Chris Sununu and the Republican Party is completely out of touch with New Hampshire values. And if we lose Roe, we know that Republicans in New Hampshire are going to do everything in their power to strip abortion rights at the state level. There’s too much at stake this year for anyone to sit this one out. From the North Country to the Seacoast and at every level of government we need to elect Democrats who will protect our right to choose. And now we’ll open it up for questions.”
