NHDP Statement: NH House Republicans elect scandalous, disgraced former Speaker as their leader

Concord, N.H. - With 192 votes, Republican state Representative Gene Chandler was elected Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. NHDP Chair Ray Buckley issued the following statement: "Gene Chandler is famous for a scandalous run as New Hampshire Speaker from 2001 to 2004, ending in an expulsion recommendation and the longest run of Democratic governors in the state since before the Civil War. People who know Chandler remember him for his corruption lawsuit, illegal cash gifts from lobbyists, pocketing fundraising money for personal use and looking the other way on sexual harassment. With nowhere else to turn, Republicans ignored Chandler's shameful history just like they did when they held their nose to cast a vote for Donald Trump. Electing Chandler as Speaker isn't just bad for New Hampshire, it spells a bad 2018 for Governor Sununu and New Hampshire Republicans across the state."
