MEMO: Sununu’s Budget Shows His True Anti-Choice Agenda By Including An Abortion Ban

OVERVIEW: Governor Chris Sununu is showing New Hampshire his true anti-choice colors by supporting a budget that will ban abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest — and charge doctors with felony penalties, including up to 7 years in prison, for taking care of their patients. In a radio interview and at a press conference on Thursday, the Governor made clear that he is anti-choice by backing Senate Republicans’ budget, which not only bans abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest, but includes mandatory ultrasounds and would put doctors in prison for up to seven years for providing care to women in need. An abortion ban has no place in the state budget. By supporting an abortion ban, Governor Chris Sununu has made clear that he supports interfering in women's most personal, difficult, and complicated health care decisions. BACKGROUND: Governor Chris Sununu’s extreme and cruel abortion ban would:

  • Provide No Exceptions for Rape or Incest: Under, Governor Sununu’s abortion ban, the victims of sexual assault and incest would lose the right to make complex and deeply personal decisions about their reproductive health.

  • Put Doctors in Jail: Governor Sununu’s abortion ban would charge doctors with a felony for simply doing their job, including penalties of up to 7 years in prison for medical providers.

  • Require Mandatory Ultrasounds: Governor Chris Sununu’s ban is one of the most invasive in the country and requires doctors to give women forced ultrasounds.

KEY TAKEWAY: Governor Chris Sununu is showing New Hampshire his true anti-choice agenda by supporting an abortion ban that includes no exceptions for rape or incest, would charge doctors with felonies, mandate ultrasounds, and interfere in women’s most complex and difficult health decisions. Governor Chris Sununu and the Legislature must remove this anti-choice, anti-women’s health care ban from the budget immediately.
