ICYMI: Keene Leaders Call Out The Threat The McConnell-Sununu Agenda Poses To New Hampshire

Keene Leaders Call Out the Threat the McConnell-Sununu Agenda Poses to New Hampshire

Keene, N.H. — Today, the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s McConnell-Sununu Exposed statewide tour stopped in Keene, where State Representative Joe Schapiro, State Representative Amanda Toll, and Mohammad Saleh, chair of the Cheshire County Democrats, called out Mitch McConnell’s all-out effort to recruit Chris Sununu to run for Senate and laid out the threat the McConnell-Sununu agenda poses to New Hampshire.

Key Excerpts:

Mohammed Saleh: “The worst-kept secret in Washington is that Mitch McConnell wants Governor Sununu to run for Senate. It is clear that this has nothing, whatsoever, to do with what is best for the people of New Hampshire. Over the past few months, the Senate Minority Leader has done everything he can to push Sununu to enter the race for US Senate. [...] Our message is clear: McConnell’s very public wooing of Sununu has nothing to do with what’s best for New Hampshire. McConnell knows that Sununu would be a rubber stamp for his agenda and is his ticket to winning back power in DC. That’s why McConnell and his cronies are doing everything they can to get Sununu to run.

State Rep. Joe Schapiro: “Mitch McConnell and his out-of-state allies have gone all-in on pressing Governor Sununu to run because they know he would vote with Senator McConnell’s corporate special interest allies and their legislative priorities. How do they know? Because Governor Sununu has a long record of publicly supporting the McConnell agenda — even when it hurts New Hampshire. This year, when Congress was passing the American Rescue Plan to help working families during the worst days of the pandemic, Senator McConnell ensured Senate Republicans voted in lockstep against the plan. And at McConnell’s cue, Governor Sununu made clear that he would have been a 'no' vote; a vote that would have defeated the bill.”

State Rep. Amanda Elizabeth Toll: “Both Mitch McConnell and Chris Sununu have a long record of attacking pregnant people’s rights to make their own health care decisions and control their own destinies. Mitch McConnell led the effort to defund Planned Parenthood in the US Senate — and Chris Sununu was the deciding vote in New Hampshire to defund the organization. And as Majority Leader, McConnell has repeatedly advanced legislation that would ban abortion. In June, Sununu pushed through a budget that would ban abortion without exceptions for rape, incest, or fatal fetal anomaly and that would require ultrasounds prior to an abortion and includes felony penalties--up to 7 years in prison--against doctors. [...] As someone who has had an abortion, I can speak to just how devastating Governor Sununu’s anti-choice policies are to women and pregnant people in the Granite State.”

The stop was part of McConnell-Sununu Exposed, a new project from the New Hampshire Democratic Party aimed at shining a bright light on Mitch McConnell’s “full-court press” to recruit Chris Sununu into the US Senate race. The project launched in Manchester Wednesday at an event with NHDP Chair Ray Buckley, State Senator Kevin Cavanaugh, and State Representative Mary Heath. Yesterday, the NHDP hosted a virtual press conference with Senator Rebecca Whitley, State Representative Laura Telerski and Executive Director of Granite State Progress Zandra Rice Hawkins to discuss Chris Sununu’s decision to side with Mitch McConnell and oppose the American Rescue Plan’s Child Tax Credit.
