Twitter Found the Account in Violation of its Rules, and the Account Was Removed
Concord, N.H. – Today, the New Hampshire Democratic Party warned the public to stay vigilant about the information they see online, following Republicans creation of a Twitter account that was meant to deceive voters into believing it was the New Hampshire Democratic Party's official account. The account used NHDP's official logo. After the account was up for about 24 hours (starting Sunday morning), Twitter found the account in violation of its policies and removed it. "We know that our foreign adversaries have been spreading propaganda to deceive voters for the past few years, but it's especially troubling that this impersonation of our official Party account – meant to mislead and sway voters based on lies – originated in our own backyard," said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. Publicly available data about the fake account suggests that the account was established by someone affiliated with the Hillsborough County Republican Committee. Last month at the National Meeting of the Association of Democratic Chairs in Santa Fe, Ray Buckley proposed a resolution to combat fake accounts like these. The resolution urges the Democratic National Committee to establish a new party-wide framework to combat the use of illicit campaign tactics, including preventing disinformation tactics like fake social media accounts, fake websites, and falsified video and audio. "It's clear that Republicans are going to do everything they can to lie, cheat, and steal their way to winning in 2020. These deceitful attacks are starting early, and voters need to be vigilant," said Buckley.
