Sununu-backed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos rejects complaints of transgender students

Concord, N.H. - Today, the U.S. Department of Education decided to officially reject rather than investigate the complaints of transgender children who have issued complaints about bathroom discrimination. In July, Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos reversed an Obama-era policy to allow transgender students to use the bathroom associated with their gender identity for their safety and well being. NHDP Chair Ray Buckley issued the following statement: "This is another shameful, hateful decision by the Trump administration. Transgender school children across New Hampshire will be affected by this absurd decision. Governor Sununu, who actively campaigned for Betsy DeVos during her nomination process for Education Secretary, must take responsibility and speak out. Regardless of whatever political posturing Sununu is engaged in now, he has a clear history on the issue, not only backing DeVos but appointing his own anti-transgender rights zealot Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut. Sununu's father is an original disseminator of the absurd 'bathroom' argument that simply serves as coded language against transgender equality. Chris Sununu said he had 'no personal opinion' on the issue and otherwise stayed silent for over a year as governor while state legislation was being considered. It would certainly be a welcome change from Sununu's blind loyalty to Trump for him to speak out against the decision of his and Trump's handpicked Education Secretary."
