CONCORD, NH – In case you missed it, at the Gridiron Club Dinner in Washington this weekend, Governor Sununu called Trump “f---king crazy,” and “I don’t think he’s so crazy that you could put him in a mental institution. But I think if he were in one, he ain’t getting out.” In an interview with MSNBC, Sununu flip flopped on these comments, and dodged questions about whether or not Trump will be the presidential nominee in 2024. It’s clear that Republican Congressional candidates will have to choose – are they Team Trump or Team Sununu?
In CD-01, Republican candidates have repeatedly expressed support for Trump and his Big Lie, even after the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th.
Karoline Leavitt, a former Trump staffer, has expressed support for a Republican primary to unseat Governor Sununu and has repeatedly attacked her primary opponents for not supporting Trump enough.
Matt Mowers, another former Trump staffer, was endorsed by Trump in his failed Congressional race in 2020. His campaign advisor Corey Lewandowski has called for a primary of Governor Sununu in the wake of previous comments about the former president.
Gail Huff Brown has repeatedly expressed her support for Trump, stating that she will continue “defending Former President Trump’s policies. There is no question about loyalty,” however, she has also repeatedly praised Governor Sununu.
In CD-02, candidates have been just as supportive of the disgraced former President.
Bob Burns, who has been endorsed by Trump’s top New Hampshire surrogates, has been a vocal supporter of Trump since 2016. He has repeatedly touted his relationship with Trump, stating that he "has supported President Trump from the beginning” and continues to push the debunked narrative that votes in the 2020 election were stolen.
Jeff Cozzens has also been endorsed by some of Trump’s former top campaign staff, but was lauded by Sununu for being the “real deal” just this past October.
Lily Tang Williams has been a public supporter of Trump and supported his failed re-election campaign in 2020.
