Shea-Porter: Biden-Harris administration working hard for American women
In case you missed it, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter penned an op-ed at the closing of Women’s History Month to highlight the work that President Biden and Vice President Harris have been doing for women in the Granite State and throughout the nation.
When President Biden was elected, he noted these problems and vowed to work on solutions. While there are many difficult issues remaining, the positive changes and victories for women this past year represent significant advances.
The Biden-Harris Administration came into office in January 2021 and immediately worked on the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to help Americans during the darkest days of COVID. They expanded the Child Tax Credit, which helped lower child poverty last year. Some of the money from the ARP helped childcare providers stay open.
The Biden-Harris Administration has also prioritized access to comprehensive health care for women. President Biden issued a presidential memorandum to protect and expand access to comprehensive reproductive health care, and the Administration has taken steps to eliminate racial disparities in maternal health.
President Biden, who authored the Violence Against Women Act when he was in the United States Senate, just signed the Omnibus package that renewed it again. There was also money in the American Rescue Plan to combat domestic violence, help prevent sexual assault, and provide services to survivors.
The Biden-Harris team has worked hard to make sure women do have a seat at the center of power. Vice President Harris is the first woman to hold that office, and President Biden has a record number of women serving in his Cabinet and in other senior executive positions. He has had 51 federal judges confirmed, and nearly 75% of them are women. He has nominated a historic number of women of color, and has nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as our first Black female Supreme Court Justice.
This is an impressive first year, but it is just the beginning. President Biden and his White House team are working to create more opportunity and fairness for the women of this country.
