CONCORD, NH — On Friday, Governor Sununu signed SB 418, a voter suppression bill, into law, despite serious constitutional concerns.
Active and retired military personnel, veterans, election officials, and activists have repeatedly explained how harmful this legislation is, and how it would complicate our elections and jeopardize the rights of overseas voters, like those serving in our armed forces abroad. New Hampshire’s Secretary of State has proposed seeking a Supreme Court opinion on the bill’s constitutionality.
Governor Sununu himself has criticized this legislation, but that did not stop him from cowering to the far-right extremists of his party yet again.
In response, NHDP Chair Ray Buckley has released the following statement:
“Chris Sununu’s signing of SB 418 is only the latest example of his inability to stand up against the far right extremists in his party. As his poll numbers tank and Republican gubernatorial primary candidates emerge, Sununu is racing to the right to appease his base, and he is willing to jeopardize our very democracy to do it.
This legislation, which he himself has criticized, is an attack on our elections. New Hampshire is the gold standard when it comes to elections, yet Republicans in Concord are once again attempting to inject the Big Lie and debunked conspiracy theories about voter fraud into our democracy.”
