NHDP Statement on Release of U.S. Census Bureau Release of Redistricting Data

Concord, N.H. -- Today, with the U.S. Census Bureau’s release of redistricting data, the 2021 redistricting process is officially underway and Republicans are poised to continue their corrupt practice of drawing gerrymandered maps to try to hold onto power for the next decade. This past January, the Chair of the NHGOP openly proclaimed their plans to gerrymander the maps and Governor Sununu previously vetoed legislation that would have ensured a fair redistricting process and has made clear that he will allow Republican politicians to draw districts that benefit themselves.

Following the release of the data, NHDP Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement:

"Our democracy depends on free and fair elections, but that bedrock is threatened by hyper-partisan Republicans who are openly admitting that they are going to rig the process, drawing districts to serve their interests instead of our communities’ needs. Chris Sununu has repeatedly blocked bipartisan efforts to ensure fair redistricting and made clear that he is more than happy to allow Republican politicians to draw their own districts.

“Despite Chris Sununu and Republicans’ support for gerrymandering, Democrats on the redistricting committees will fight to make sure that the vote of every Granite Stater has equal weight and each of our communities has equal access to the decision making processes that determine funding for schools, hospitals, and the future of our state -- because Democrats believe that voters should pick their leaders, not the other way around."
