Concord, N.H. -- Today, House Republicans on the Finance Committee adopted an amendment that would defund the state Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and independent abortion providers while effectively banning Federal Qualified Health Centers from working with these providers to provide abortions. In response, the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s Executive Director Amy Kennedy released the following statement:
“Chris Sununu’s Republican Party is launching an all-out attack on women’s reproductive rights in New Hampshire to try and ban abortion. This draconian amendment would defund Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health care providers in the middle of a global pandemic just to prevent women from accessing safe and legal abortions. This amendment -- and every single piece of anti-choice legislation pushed by New Hampshire Republicans -- will hurt people’s access to comprehensive health care and is opposed by a majority of Granite Staters.
“Instead of working on legislation to help Granite Staters during this pandemic, New Hampshire Republicans want to eliminate funding for access to birth control, STD testing and treatment, and other essential health care services, which would adversely affect low-income Granite Staters, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and those in rural New Hampshire.
“Chris Sununu’s New Hampshire Republican Party has been pushing this anti-choice agenda for years. It is shameful that Chris Sununu and Republicans in the State House continue to insert themselves in a decision that should be between a patient and their doctor.”
