“Whoever is the Republican nominee for governor, I will certainly support that person.”
MANCHESTER, NH – This morning, in an interview with Jack Heath on the Pulse of New Hampshire, NH-01 GOP candidate Karoline Leavitt took her loyalty to former President Donald Trump up a notch, voicing support for a primary challenger against Chris Sununu, her party’s leader in the Granite State.
Referencing disgraced Trump henchman Corey Lewandowski’s declaration that he would search for a Republican primary challenge against Sununu on the former president’s orders, Heath asked Leavitt if she “agreed with [her] former boss on that”. Her response?
“...Anyone has the right to run for office. You know, that’s what primaries are for. I’m in a contentious primary myself, and voters should be able to have options in who they elect.
“Whoever is the Republican nominee for governor, I will certainly support that person.”
Leavitt, a former Trump staffer who continuously shares conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, has already ratcheted up her attacks against her primary opponents like Matt Mowers and Gail Huff Brown for not supporting Trump strongly enough in her view. Now, in the contest to earn the coveted Trump endorsement in the NH-01 GOP primary, Leavitt is willing to throw Governor Sununu under the bus to give herself “options” and the chance to support “whoever” is her party’s nominee for governor.
Given the ultimatum that New Hampshire Republicans have received, GOP NH-01 candidates like Matt Mowers, who employs Lewandowski as an advisor, will have to make a choice – will they side with Chris Sununu or Donald Trump?
One thing is certain – no matter what side of this Trump vs. Sununu squabble that NH-01 GOP candidates find themselves in, Granite Staters lose.
Key Excerpts:
Jack Heath: “You worked for the Trump White House. You were on the media side, one of the deputy press people, I believe. You’ve been very favorable and positive towards the former president. And, the former president through Corey Lewandowski a few weeks ago criticized Chris Sununu, saying that he needs to go, and that a Republican should challenge Chris Sununu in the primary. Do you agree with your former boss on that, and where’s that coming from?”
Karoline Leavitt: “Yes, I did serve in President Trump’s White House. I was an assistant press secretary in his press office for Kayleigh McEnany, the [inaudible] former press secretary. It was an honor to work for the president. I strongly support the America First agenda, and I believe that’s the direction the Republican Party is moving. I think that our governor managed the pandemic well, he’s been a big supporter of small business [inaudible] like my own, and, anyone has the right to run for office. You know, that’s what primaries are for. I’m in a contentious primary myself, and voters should be able to have options in who they elect. Whoever is the Republican nominee for governor, I will certainly support that person. I will certainly support whoever our Republican nominee is on the Senate side – another contentious primary. Voters have a lot of options right now, and that’s what I support, as part of our democracy. I think it’s great, and that’s why I’m running. Everyone has the right to run and everyone has the right to represent their home state.”
