ICYMI - WMUR: NH Democrats praise Biden’s first 100 days, push back on Christie, GOP criticism

In Case You Missed It, WMUR’s John DiStaso reported that Senator Donna Soucy, Senator Tom Sherman, Representative Manny Espitia, President of NH Young Democrats, and Joanna Kelley, owner of Cup of Joe in Portsmouth, discussed how President Biden has helped Granite Staters in his first 100 days in office, despite efforts by Chris Sununu and Washington Republicans to oppose COVID relief and block the state’s economic recovery.

Key points:

  • “Sherman said that under Biden, and with the help of the state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation, New Hampshire received more than $439 million in funding for local communities and $362 million more for K-12 schools. Stimulus checks of $1,400 have been distributed to 837,000 adults in the state. He accused Gov. Chris Sununu of ‘trying to block this progress’ by opposing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and lifting the state’s mask mandate.”

  • “‘It’s unfortunate that Governor Sununu has said that if he were in the Senate, he would have sided with Mitch McConnell and Washington Republicans and blocked this much-needed relief for New Hampshire,’ Soucy said.”

  • “State Rep. Manny Espitia, president of the New Hampshire Young Democrats, said Biden and congressional Democrats have delivered ‘real, tangible results for Granite Staters and their families.’”

  • “Joanna Kelley, owner of Cup of Joe in Portsmouth, said the American Rescue Plan provided relief for 4 million small businesses like hers, and helped her business stay afloat. She noted that Sununu initially cut funding for the Small Business Development Center, which she said she used to help open her business.”

NH Primary Source: NH Democrats praise Biden’s first 100 days, push back on Christie, GOP criticism By John DiStaso NH DEMS SAY BIDEN OFF TO STRONG START. State Democratic leaders and a Portsmouth business owner praised President Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office Wednesday and hit back at “name-calling” Republicans, who, they said, have no constructive agenda of their own. “The Republicans are grasping at straws these days because they are really, I think, stunned at how much the president has accomplished in his first 100 days,” state Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy said during a virtual news conference. Ahead of Biden’s Wednesday speech night to the nation and a scaled-down, socially distanced version of a joint session of Congress, the Democrats said Biden has moved beyond even his own goals in delivering COVID-19 vaccines and economic help to the nation. They also pushed back on Republican former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who earlier Wednesday appeared before about 100 Granite State conservatives and charged that Biden lied when he called the new voting law in Georgia a “Jim Crow” measure and when he promised that he would not raise taxes on any American earning less than $400,000 annually. [...] The Democrats said Christie is engaging in personal attacks on Biden because the facts are not on his side. “There’s no question that the Georgia law is going to prevent people from exercising the right to vote,” Soucy said. “Things as simple as allowing someone to distribute water while somebody waits in line, precluding that is outrageous. “The president has been truthful with the American people,” she said. “He said he was going to get shots in arms, he said he was going to help us reopen and recover, coming in July. The president is far ahead of the goals he set for himself in so many ways.” “To suggest that the tax policy isn’t honest is actually dishonest on their part.” State Sen. Tom Sherman, a Rye physician, said 94,203 Granite States tested positive for COVID-19 and 1,294 of them had died as of Tuesday. But he said that since Biden took office, “We have seen unprecedented emphasis on, and compliance with, life-saving precautions – wearing a mask, practicing good hygiene and staying socially distanced. And because of this approach, case counts have dropped nationwide and our economy is rebounding, finally being able to reopen.” He noted that the Biden administration has exceeded its vaccination goals, delivering more than 200 million shots in fewer than 100 days, resulting in a 75 percent drop in daily COVID-related deaths. Sherman said that under Biden, and with the help of the state’s all-Democratic congressional delegation, New Hampshire received more than $439 million in funding for local communities and $362 million more for K-12 schools. Stimulus checks of $1,400 have been distributed to 837,000 adults in the state. He accused Gov. Chris Sununu of “trying to block this progress” by opposing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and lifting the state’s mask mandate. Responding to Christie, Sherman said, “Another tactic on the part of politicians is if you can’t beat somebody on the facts, if you can’t beat somebody on their actions, you start name-calling.” Soucy said the American Rescue Plan directs $1.42 billion New Hampshire and provided a child tax credit of up to $1,600 per child to the families of 222,000 children. “It’s life-saving for thousands of Granite Staters and allowed our economy to survive these compounding crises,” Soucy said. “It’s unfortunate that Governor Sununu has said that if he were in the Senate, he would have sided with Mitch McConnell and Washington Republicans and blocked this much-needed relief for New Hampshire,” Soucy said. State Rep. Manny Espitia, president of the New Hampshire Young Democrats, said Biden and congressional Democrats have delivered “real, tangible results for Granite Staters and their families.” “We’re making an investment here,” he said. “President Biden has shown in the past 100 days that he’s willing to make an investment in things like infrastructure – roads, bridges, broadband for so many of our rural Granite Staters. We are trying to make sure corporations are paying a fair share so that we can invest in families, pre-K and housing.” Joanna Kelley, owner of Cup of Joe in Portsmouth, said the American Rescue Plan provided relief for 4 million small businesses like hers, and helped her business stay afloat. She noted that Sununu initially cut funding for the Small Business Development Center, which she said she used to help open her business. [...] Sherman said that despite claims that Biden is not being truthful, “Just look at what he’s done. The outcomes have been absolutely spectacular from a health care standpoint. “That can’t be undermined. It’s not a lie. It’s the reality,” he said. “It’s not socialism either. None of this that he has actually implemented meets any definition of socialism.”
