Hansel Supports Mississippi Law Criminalizing Doctors for Performing a Life-Saving Abortion

CONCORD, NH — George Hansel, a Republican primary candidate in New Hampshire’s Second District, continues to make empty claims that he is "pro-choice." But, he supports politician-control of abortion and stands behind dangerous policies that restrict access to care. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the state of Mississippi’s last abortion clinic — which was at the center of the ruling — shut down. The state has banned abortion with no exception for incest and would have any doctor who performs an abortion face up to 10 years in prison. Despite this extremely dangerous law, Hansel believes that states regulate abortion access “pretty well.” In response to this egregious invasion of privacy and interference in private medical decisions, NHDP spokesperson Monica Venzke released the following statement:

“It is unthinkable that someone who claims to be pro-choice supports politician-control of abortion access — going as far as to ban victims of incest from getting treatment from their doctors. Let alone sending doctors who do treat their patients to jail. But, that is exactly what Republican George Hansel believes.

The simple explanation: George Hansel, just like Bob Burns and Lily Tang Williams, is not pro-choice and he does not represent the majority of Granite Staters’ belief that the government should have no say in personal, private medical decisions.”
