Fact Check: While 2,931 Housing Assistance Applications Go Unprocessed, Sununu Falsely Claims ...

Governor Chris Sununu is falsely claiming that everyone in New Hampshire who needs it can access rental assistance — despite the fact that 2,931 applications for housing aid have not been processed because his administration is failing to provide community organizations with the support they need. Yesterday on NH Today with Chris Ryan, Governor Sununu said “there's really no reason someone can't go get all this additional financial assistance for the near and even long term.” Yet 37% of applications for rental assistance have not been processed. While Community Action Partnership is doing everything they can to get Granite Staters the resources they need to stay in their homes, the Sununu administration is failing to provide them with the support that they need. This is not the first time Gov. Sununu has misstated the extent of the issues processing housing assistance applications. Two weeks ago, at a press conference Sununu claimed that 1,000 applications were still waiting to be processed when the number was actually 3,200. Fact Check: THE FALSE CLAIM: SUNUNU SAYS THAT “THERE’S REALLY NO REASON” SOMEONE CAN’T GET RENTAL ASSISTANCE. “We have a rental assistance program with tens and hundreds of millions of dollars available to folks. So there's really no reason someone can't go get all this additional financial assistance for the near and even long term.” [NH Today with Chris Ryan, 8/3/21] THE FACTS: 37 PERCENT OF GRANITE STATERS’ HOUSING ASSISTANCE APPLICATIONS HAVE NOT BEEN PROCESSED. According to the New Hampshire Emergency Rental Assistance Program, 37% of applications have not even been processed.
