Concord, N.H. - At today’s debate, Chris Sununu lied about being pro-choice and how he, like Trump, has a lengthy record of opposing reproductive health access.
“Just like Donald Trump, Sununu worked to defund Planned Parenthood which would end cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, and other women's health care programs,” said Michael Beyer, spokesperson for the New Hampshire Democratic Party.
BACKGROUND:
Sununu Nominated An Anti-Choice Activist To The State Supreme Court And Pledged To Renominate Him If Re-Elected. According to WMUR, “[Sununu’s] stated intention [is] to wait until after the election to try for the second time to nominate Attorney General Gordon MacDonald as chief justice of the state Supreme Court.” [WMUR, 9/24/20]
Sununu’s Veto Of The Reproductive Health Parity Act Restricts Access to Abortion, Even When Medically Necessary. According to Seacoast Online, “The Health Parity Act would have required commercial and ACA Marketplace insurance plans to cover abortion care if they also cover maternity care. In New Hampshire, an insurance company can deny coverage for an abortion procedure, even if medically necessary.” [Seacoast Online, 9/22/20]
Sununu Cast The Deciding Vote To Defund Planned Parenthood. According to Seacoast Online, “Sununu [...] cast the deciding vote against two contracts for women’s health services in August.” [Seacoast Online, 1/28/16]
In 2016, Sununu Pledged To An Anti-Choice Activist Ways He Would Restrict Access To Abortion If Elected Governor. According to Ovide Lamontagne, “Shortly after winning his Primary, Chris called me to discuss his views on a host of conservative issues and specifically asked me to help him understand what pro-life initiatives I thought he could support. As we discussed a number of these issues, he explained his opposition to late term and partial birth abortion; his support of conscience rights for health care workers; his view that the buffer zone law should be repealed; and his belief that abortion providers should be held to the same health and safety standards applicable to healthcare facilities such as ambulatory surgical centers and providers [...] I do believe that if elected Chris will indeed advance a constitutional and common-sense pro-life agenda, something that hasn’t happened in NH from the Corner Office in years.” [Email from Ovide Lamontagne, 11/4/16]
