“Chris Sununu opening his final State of the State address with ‘fourth term don’t care’ was a perfect encapsulation of his failures to support Granite Staters as governor. Throughout his speech, Sununu lied about his record while taking credit for accomplishments by the Biden-Harris administration, New Hampshire’s all-Democratic federal delegation, and Democrats across the state. The reality is Sununu signed New Hampshire’s first modern abortion ban into law, vetoed common-sense gun safety legislation, and stood idly by while his MAGA minions in the State Legislature waged dangerous culture wars. He railed against critical legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, which created good-paying jobs, lowered prescription drug costs, invested in infrastructure, and strengthened public safety.

“At every turn, Sununu failed to step up and do his job — and Granite Staters paid the price. Now, Republicans like Kelly Ayotte and Chuck Morse are running to not only continue Sununu’s failures, but make things worse. Ayotte and Morse would rip away reproductive access, undermine public education, and enable the NHGOP’s war on our freedoms and democratic values.

“This November, voters will have a choice between Democrats’ successes and the failed Republican extremism that Ayotte and Morse are running on. Today, we’re one step closer to electing a pro-choice Democrat to the Corner Office, so we can finally be proud of our governor again.”

“Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, a time to reflect and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. Black Americans are the backbone of our nation, and our resilience, strength, and brilliance has sparked change across generations. Black history is American history, and we must remember it every day.

“We honor the giants of the civil rights movement like Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and Ida B. Wells; the suffragists like Mary-Ann Shadd Cary and Mary Church Terrell who secured women’s rights to vote; the activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Zazu Nova who fought for gay liberation; and so many more. These leaders paved the way for us to have our first Black Vice President, Kamala Harris, our first Black woman on the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and our first Black House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries. We see the sacrifices of Black leaders in the freedoms we enjoy today, and each one of us is better because of their fights for justice. Here in New Hampshire, Black Americans have made great strides winning elections in local and state government, rising into the circles of power and influence in the business, academic, nonprofit and faith communities.

“While our country has made historic strides towards equality, the legacy of enslavement and Jim Crow is still alive. Black Americans — including in the Granite State — still struggle with racism, economic injustice, housing disparities, and health care discrimination. On the path towards true justice, our work is just beginning. New Hampshire Democrats are committed to uplifting Black voices and working towards an equitable future for all. Join us.”

Senator Melanie Levesque of Brookline, in 2018, became the first person of color elected to the NH state senate. In 2022 she was a candidate for Secretary of State. She is currently the chairs of the Black African American Caucus of the NH Democratic Party and Brookline Town Democratic Committee.

“Tonight confirmed what Granite Staters have known for months: the Republican Party is all in on the extreme MAGA agenda. Every time he set foot in New Hampshire, Donald Trump doubled down on his plans to ban abortion nationwide, give handouts to the ultra-rich and big corporations while leaving working families behind, and undermine our democracy. Trump is running on the same unpopular MAGA agenda that caused him to lose New Hampshire twice, failed to win election denier Don Bolduc a Senate seat, and helped lead to Democratic victories in special elections last year.

“The stakes in 2024 are higher than ever, and the choice is clear. We are in a fight to ensure every Granite Stater has more freedoms and not fewer; every working family can put a roof over their heads and food on their table; and our country’s democratic values prevail over Trump’s attempts to undermine them. New Hampshire Democrats are ready to organize and mobilize to reject Trump once again and reelect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris this November.”

“Tonight, Granite Staters delivered an overwhelming victory for President Joe Biden in the Democratic presidential primary — all thanks to the hundreds of grassroots organizers who successfully coordinated an historic write-in campaign that mobilized tens of thousands of voters across New Hampshire. Despite President Biden’s absence from the ballot, Granite Staters still turned out in robust numbers to show their support for the great work that the Biden-Harris Administration has done to grow the economy, protect reproductive freedoms, and defend our democracy. Once again, New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary made history — and we are proud as ever.

“While Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson came up short tonight, we appreciate their robust campaign effort and thank them for running. New Hampshire Democrats pride ourselves with our commitment to a level playing field that gives all candidates the opportunity to get out their message.

“Granite Staters know the stakes of this election: our freedoms and democracy on the ballot. As we turn our focus to the general election, it is abundantly clear New Hampshire Democrats are excited to re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris, elect a Democratic governor, and flip the State Legislature blue. On to victory in November!”

<![CDATA[ICYMI: New Reporting Spotlights Haley’s History of Supporting Election Deniers Like Don Bolduc]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/icymi-new-reporting-spotlights-haley-s-history-of-supporting-election-deniers-like-don-bolduc-165aadff498819f2094708ff5Fri, 19 Jan 2024 20:48:12 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — New reporting from CBS News today spotlighted Nikki Haley’s record of supporting election deniers, including Don Bolduc, who Haley supported during his failed 2022 Senate run. After saying she wouldn’t support those who denied 2020 election results, Haley flip-flopped and endorsed Bolduc and other election-denying candidates in 2022 when it was politically convenient.

Haley is now banking on his support to win New Hampshire — even making him chair of her in-state campaign and running ads with him. Election denialism is wildly unpopular with Granite Staters, who want nothing to do with anyone who undermines democracy.

CBS News: Nikki Haley turns to unlikely duo — Gov. Chris Sununu and Don Bolduc — to help her beat Trump in New Hampshire

 • Retired Army Brig. Gen. Don Bolduc, a veteran of 10 tours in Afghanistan and one of Haley's first endorsements, was the first to speak, touted Haley's support of his failed 2022 Senate run and explained why he signed on to be her New Hampshire campaign chair.

 • A seminal moment in Bolduc's 2022 race was his flip-flop over whether he believed the election had been stolen from Trump, an opinion shared by 19 other 2022 GOP Senate candidates, according to a CBS News analysis.

 • "I signed a letter with 120 other generals and admirals saying that Donald Trump won the election and, damn it, I stand by [it], Bolduc said in an August 2022 debate against Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan. "I'm not switching horses, baby. This is it," he added.

 • Haley's comments about her support for election deniers have not always been accurate. In a 2022 interview with the "Today" show, she said that she would not campaign for candidates who had denied the results of the 2020 election.

 • "Everybody that I'm helping acknowledges the fact that the elections, you know, were real," Haley said.

 • However, Haley had campaigned for Bolduc both before and after his remarks claiming Trump had won the election. She also campaigned for or endorsed other GOP Senate candidates who cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election: Adam Laxalt of Nevada, Herschel Walker of Georgia, Mehmet Oz of Pennsylvania and Ted Budd of North Carolina. Only Budd ultimately won his race.

 • Sununu was one of Bolduc's most vocal critics, calling him a "conspiracy-theorist-type candidate." In the Senate Republican primary, Sununu backed Bolduc's challenger in the race, Chuck Morse. In response, Bolduc called Sununu a "Chinese Communist sympathizer." But after Bolduc won the primary, Sununu eventually supported him in the general election.

 • Bolduc's involvement in Haley's campaign isn't without risk. A longtime New Hampshire political operative told CBS News he was polled via text by the Haley campaign on Bolduc's favorables, suggesting that Haley's team has some concerns about Bolduc's appeal to GOP primary voters, particularly independents.

 • "I wonder if they've calculated the paradoxical effect of Bolduc, and if they calculated the net loss percentage of putting him up front," the operative added. "They'll realize at some point after the fact they made a mistake here."

Haley is running on the same unpopular MAGAnomics failures that left Trump with the worst jobs record since the Great Depression and Granite Staters will reject once again in 2024.

WATCH:

Haley: “Well, I think what I’d like to see is us go back to what Trump had under the tax cuts under him … I was there.”

Nikki Haley has always sided with big corporations over working families:

 • Haley sided with corporations’ bottom lines over hardworking South Carolinians — and then cashed out on her business ties.

 • She gave just four corporations “more than $800 million in state incentives and tax breaks” instead of investing in everyday South Carolinians.

“Save yourself an hour tonight. In the final days before the primary, Nikki Haley is desperately reminding Granite Staters that she’s eager to bring an extreme agenda of failed MAGAnomics, a national abortion ban, and an end to Social Security and Medicare as we know them to the White House — and this town hall will just be more of the same. Instead of offering any plans to help working families, Haley has spent her campaign cozying up to election deniers like Don Bolduc. Just like we’ve already done with Trump and Bolduc, Granite Staters can’t wait to reject whichever MAGA Republican makes it out of this extreme primary at the ballot box.”

<![CDATA[REMINDER: Nikki Haley Wants To Gut Granite Staters’ Social Security]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/reminder-nikki-haley-wants-to-gut-granite-staters-social-security65a6ccba91a54f0c822ecf59Tue, 16 Jan 2024 18:37:41 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — Nikki Haley is back in New Hampshire, spinning her extreme agenda to gut Social Security, a program that hundreds of thousands of seniors and their families rely on here. Haley might not realize how deeply unpopular her plans are, but Granite Staters do — and that’s one of the many reasons why they’ll reject her this year.

Here’s a look at Nikki Haley’s record:

 • Haley has tripled down on calls to cut Social Security and Medicare on the campaign trail, following her old boss Donald Trump’s lead.

 • As South Carolina governor, Haley pushed to put Medicare and Social Security programs on the chopping block in South Carolina.

 • Haley’s attacks on affordable health care don’t stop there, either:

 • In New Hampshire, Haley opened the door to repealing the Affordable Care Act, doubling down on the MAGA agenda to endanger health care access for tens of thousands of Granite Staters.

 • Haley repeatedly railed against the ACA throughout her governorship, even calling to “defund” the program.

 • She praised Paul Ryan’s plan to end Medicare as we know it as “common sense.”

 • Haley refused to expand Medicaid under the ACA, leaving her own constituents uninsured and forced to pay exorbitant health care costs.

 • Here’s what Haley herself has proudly said about her anti-ACA record: “We have fought Obamacare in South Carolina as much as we possibly could. We said no to the state exchanges. We said no to the Medicaid expansion.”

<![CDATA[NH Union Leader Op-Ed: Alexis Simpson: Women’s freedom is under attack in NH and Trump is to blame]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/nh-union-leader-op-ed-alexis-simpson-women-s-freedom-is-under-attack-in-nh-and-trump-is-to-blame65a6a281d0eb19ce48b57379Tue, 16 Jan 2024 16:22:29 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — Today, the New Hampshire Union Leader published an op-ed by Deputy State House Democratic Leader Alexis Simpson. Rep. Simpson slammed the NHGOP for proposing cruel abortion bans — made possible by Donald Trump and his role in overturning Roe v. Wade — and highlighted how 2024 Republicans like Trump, Nikki Haley, and Ron DeSantis are all running on the same agenda of banning abortion nationwide.

Read on for highlights from the op-ed.

Union Leader: Alexis Simpson: Women’s freedom is under attack in NH and Trump is to blame

 • Last week, the New Hampshire House held hearings on two anti-abortion bills, one that would deeply restrict abortion after 15 weeks and another that would ban abortion after 15 days. If passed, the 15-day abortion ban would be one of the most restrictive bans in the country. Both of these bills fly in the face of Granite State values, as they would prevent women from getting the reproductive health care they need.

 • The overturning of Roe v. Wade and the loss of federal protections for abortion — this is the cruel America that Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans created. Abortion bans are dangerous, extreme, and out of touch with the people of New Hampshire.

 • Republicans running for president, like Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, and Ron DeSantis, have remained silent on these bills during their recent visits to New Hampshire. They’ve refused to tell Granite Staters what they’d do if these bills landed on their desks, but Granite Staters know the truth: Each of these candidates are running to carry the same extreme agenda nationwide with a national abortion ban.

 • Trump endorsed a national ban and has repeatedly bragged about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade. Thanks to Trump, MAGA extremists are pushing to ban abortion in New Hampshire and across the country. Haley signed an abortion ban as governor that had no exceptions for rape or incest and threatened doctors with jail time, and backed a complete abortion ban as a state legislator. Last year, DeSantis signed one of the most restrictive laws in the country, banning abortion in Florida before many women know they’re pregnant. Time and again, Trump, Haley, and DeSantis used their power to rip away women’s freedoms.

 • President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, on the other hand, have been strong champions for women’s health care access. The Biden-Harris administration has defended FDA approval of medication abortion, strengthened access to contraception, and fought for women’s access to emergency medical care across the country. While Republicans in Congress have railed against taking action to protect reproductive care, President Biden has been unwavering in his calls for Congress to codify Roe into federal law.

 • Trump, Haley, and DeSantis have told us over and over who they really are -- and we need to believe them. They’ve only doubled down on their calls for national abortion bans during their campaigns, and we must trust that they’ll follow through if elected president. And if that happens, it’s New Hampshire women who will pay the price.

 • This November, I hope Granite Staters will join me in rejecting Trump and Republicans’ extreme abortion bans and reelecting President Biden and Vice President Harris: champions for our freedoms.

<![CDATA[One Week Out: 2024 Republicans Can’t Change Their Tune in NH]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/one-week-out-2024-republicans-can-t-change-their-tune-in-nh65a699f634e4889d08f9b264Tue, 16 Jan 2024 15:04:53 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — One week out from the primary, all eyes are on New Hampshire. NHDP Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement as 2024 Republicans parachute into the Granite State this week:

“2024 Republicans spent their time in Iowa spouting some of the most extreme positions in history all just to win over their fringe MAGA base. Now that they’re back in New Hampshire, Trump, Haley, and the 2024 field might desperately try to spin and hide their dangerous plans for this country because they know it won’t fly here – but Granite Staters won’t let them get away with it. No matter how they dress it up, these MAGA Republicans have already told us how they want to crash our economy and rip away our freedoms for their own political gain – and we’ll take them out their word.”

Watch some of the dangerous and out-of-touch things Trump and Haley said in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses — because they’ll have to answer for them in New Hampshire:

Donald Trump said he was “proud” to have “terminated” reproductive rights — kind of like the time he bragged that he “was able to kill Roe v. Wade.”

“For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump said he hopes the economy crashes, which would devastate hundreds of thousands of working Granite Staters.

“When there’s a crash, I hope it’s going to be during these next 12 months.”

Trump also said he’d be a dictator on day one…AGAIN.

“I’m gonna be a dictator for one day.”

Nikki Haley doubled down on her plans to rip away New Hampshire women’s freedom — another reminder to voters that she holds extreme views on this issue and has pledged to sign a national abortion ban.

Moderator: “You said you wouldn’t support…a six-week federal ban [on abortion]”

Haley: “That’s not what I said.”

Haley heaped praise on Trump, reminding voters that she’s still in lockstep with her former boss and his extreme MAGA agenda.

“I believe Trump was the right president at the right time. I agree with a lot of his policies.”

“Well, it's safe to say in New Hampshire, the DNC is less popular than the NY Yankees.

<![CDATA[Do 2024 Republicans Support NH GOP’s 15-Day Abortion Ban?]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/do-2024-republicans-support-nh-gop-s-15-day-abortion-ban65a199f78f0266fb2e2ac05aFri, 12 Jan 2024 19:59:14 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — Today, the New Hampshire state House will hold a hearing on the NH GOP’s proposed legislation to ban abortion at 15 days with no exceptions for rape or incest — making it one of the most cruel bans in the country if passed. Make no mistake: The passage of this extreme bill would only be possible because of Donald Trump.

Republicans like Trump, Nikki Haley, and Ron DeSantis are running on banning abortion nationwide but have stayed SILENT on this bill. As they campaign across the state, Granite Staters deserve to know: If this 15-day ban landed on their desk, would they sign it?

Donald Trump endorsed a national abortion ban and has bragged to Granite Staters about appointing the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.

 • On the anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Trump endorsed an extreme national abortion ban.

 • Trump’s administration backed a national abortion ban, and Trump even called for punishing women for having an abortion.

 • Trump himself proudly said he “was able to kill Roe v. Wade” — even insisting “there would be no [six-week ban]” without him.

 • He's repeatedly bragged that “nobody has ever done more” than him to pave the way for ripping away women’s freedom to make their own health care decisions.

Nikki Haley pledged to sign a national abortion ban and signed an extreme abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest as governor of South Carolina.

 • Haley has pledged several times on the campaign trail to sign a national abortion ban if passed by Congress.

 • Haley even said that she would have signed a six-week abortion ban as governor if it was brought to her desk.

 • In South Carolina, Haley proudly backed legislation that took away access to reproductive health care:

 • Signed an abortion ban as governor that had no exceptions for rape or incest and threatened doctors with jail time.

 • Backed a complete abortion ban as a state legislator with no exceptions for rape, incest, or to save the mother’s life.

 • Voted to end abortion coverage for victims of rape and incest in the state health plan for employees.

Ron DeSantis pledged to sign a national ban and signed into law cruel abortion bans in Florida.

 • DeSantis signed one of the most cruel abortion bans in the country last year, which bans abortion in Florida before many women know they’re pregnant and threatens to throw doctors in jail.

 • It’s no surprise that throughout his campaign, DeSantis has only doubled down on his support for a national abortion ban.

 • Opened the door to banning abortion nationwide less than an hour into his campaign.

 • Said he’d sign a national abortion ban if it landed on his desk.

 • Praised Iowa governor Kim Reynolds’ six-week abortion ban.

“Today marks three years since Granite Staters watched as Donald Trump, in a blatant attempt to remain in power, encouraged a violent mob to launch an insurrection on our nation’s Capitol. Insurrectionists spurred on by Trump ransacked the halls of Congress, threatened the lives of our elected leaders, and attacked law enforcement – threatening our freedoms and bringing our democracy to the brink of ruin. Since then, Trump has only doubled down on embracing insurrectionists and election deniers, parroting fascists, and even promising to be a dictator on ‘day one.’

“New Hampshire voters want more freedoms, not less – and they know we can’t afford another four years of Trump and MAGA Republicans’ chaos. This year, Granite Staters will once again reject Trump and stand with President Biden and Vice President Harris in the fight to defend democracy for all.”

“As the anniversary of the violent January 6 insurrection approaches, Nikki Haley campaigned with her notorious election-denying New Hampshire Campaign Chair Don Bolduc last night. Despite promising she wouldn’t campaign for election deniers, Haley happily stumped for Bolduc during his failed Senate race and welcomed him with open arms as one of her first endorsements.

“Haley is so desperate to bow to the extreme MAGA base that she’ll align herself with people who endanger America’s democracy, going as far as praising the Trump administration less than a month after the deadly riot at the Capitol. Granite Staters know the stakes are higher than ever for the future of democracy this year and will soundly reject MAGA extremists like Haley at the ballot box.”

Haley has spent her career opposing the Affordable Care Act, a lifeline for tens of thousands of Granite Staters — including as many as 233,000 with preexisting conditions. Now, she is making it clear that she’d consider repealing the ACA if given the chance. Haley opened the door to repeal last month, railed against the program for years, and is proudly touting her endorsement from the Koch network — which has spent a decade and tens of millions of dollars pushing for ACA repeal.

Take a look at Nikki Haley’s yearslong war on the ACA:

 • In New Hampshire last month, Haley opened the door to repealing the Affordable Care Act, doubling down on the MAGA agenda to endanger health care access for tens of thousands of Granite Staters.

 • As South Carolina governor, Haley repeatedly railed against the ACA, even calling to “defund” the program.

 • Haley refused to expand Medicaid under the ACA, which could have helped South Carolinians struggling with addiction access care — all while opioid deaths rose in South Carolina higher than the national rate.

 • Haley’s refusal to expand Medicaid left her own constituents uninsured and forced to pay exorbitant health care costs.

 • But don’t just take it from us, here’s what Haley herself has proudly said about her anti-ACA record: “We have fought Obamacare in South Carolina as much as we possibly could. We said no to the state exchanges. We said no to the Medicaid expansion.”

<![CDATA[At NH Town Hall, Haley REFUSED to Say the Civil War Was Fought Over Slavery]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/at-nh-town-hall-haley-refused-to-say-the-civil-war-was-fought-over-slavery6595c5c0408a5a95629b3930Wed, 03 Jan 2024 20:38:53 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — Last night in New Hampshire, Nikki Haley outright refused to even mention slavery at all when asked about the Civil War. When pushed on her answer by a Granite Stater, Haley said: “What do you want me to say about slavery? Next question”

In response, NHDP Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement:

“This is the live free or die state — any MAGA extremist like Nikki Haley who can’t speak the truth about the history of slavery and freedom in America is unfit to be commander in chief. Period. Haley’s refusal to admit that the Civil War was rooted in slavery last night in Berlin is just the latest of her shameful attempts to whitewash our country’s history. From defending the Confederate flag and leaders to equating Black History Month with Confederate History Month, Haley’s record bowing to the extreme fringes of the MAGA base speaks volumes and is yet another reason why New Hampshire voters will reject her next year.”

Here’s a reminder of Nikki Haley’s record:

 • Haley has a history of defending the Confederacy, even saying the Confederate flag is “not something that is racist.” As South Carolina governor, she held a meeting with a Confederate group and encouraged a Confederate History Month, comparing it to Black History Month.

 • Haley has said in the past that the Civil War was simply fought on the basis of “tradition versus change,” claiming that nobody did anything “out of hate.”

 • Haley initially REFUSED to take down the Confederate flag — and said it wasn't a “priority” — and has defended the right to secession.

<![CDATA[Nikki Haley’s New Year’s Resolution: Ban Abortion Nationwide]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/nikki-haley-s-new-year-s-resolution-ban-abortion-nationwide6595c537a2ee1ee5aec44284Wed, 03 Jan 2024 20:38:12 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — 2024 is just days away, but Nikki Haley has been telling us her New Year's resolutions for months, and signing a national abortion ban is at the top of her list. But Haley’s extreme record, including signing an extreme abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest, will be just as unpopular in the new year as it was in 2023.

Here’s a reminder of Nikki Haley’s extreme anti-abortion record:

 • Haley has pledged several times on the campaign trail to sign a national abortion ban if passed by Congress and has repeatedly doubled down on her support for a national abortion ban.

 • Haley even said that she would have signed a six-week abortion ban as governor if it was brought to her desk.

 • Haley has been silent on the legislation recently filed by NH House Republicans that would ban abortion at 15 days — before a woman might even become pregnant — and makes ZERO exceptions for rape or incest.

<![CDATA[Six Years Later: NHDP Statement on Trump’s Disastrous Tax Scam]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/six-years-later-nhdp-statement-on-trump-s-disastrous-tax-scam6585d2f962d0c3c1b4873947Fri, 22 Dec 2023 18:19:25 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — Today, NHDP Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement on the sixth anniversary of Donald Trump’s disastrous tax scam:

“Donald Trump’s tax scam was a disaster for Granite Staters. While New Hampshire families foot the bill, Trump handed out tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy and major corporations – all while incentivizing them to ship American jobs overseas. The same catastrophic MAGAnomics agenda that left Trump with the worst jobs record since the Great Depression is on the ballot once again next November as MAGA Republicans run to extend these handouts to the ultra-rich. In 2024, New Hampshire voters will have a clear choice between MAGA Republicans’ push to give more tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and President Biden’s historic accomplishments building the economy from the bottom up and the middle out.”

Donald Trump’s tax scam was awful for working Granite Staters:

 • Thanks in part to Trump’s tax cuts, billionaires paid less in taxes than the working class for the first time in history.

 • While billionaires and corporations benefited, middle-class families fell behind as a result of Trump’s failed policies.

 • Trump’s tax cuts had a catastrophic impact on the national deficit, ballooning our national debt and steering it to hit historic highs relative to our economy.

<![CDATA[ICYMI: Nikki Haley Backed a Complete Abortion Ban With No Exceptions in South Carolina]]>https://www.nhdp.org/post/icymi-nikki-haley-backed-a-complete-abortion-ban-with-no-exceptions-in-south-carolina6585d2b04152a9f9da2682acFri, 22 Dec 2023 18:18:22 GMTNHDPCONCORD, NH — In case you missed it, new reporting from NBC News highlighted Nikki Haley’s yearslong record of pushing for extreme abortion bans in South Carolina. Haley backed a complete abortion ban as a state legislator with no exceptions for rape, incest, or to save the mother’s life – and nothing she says on the campaign trail to Granite Staters can change the facts of her dangerous record.

Now, Haley is running to take that extreme agenda nationwide, pledging to sign a national abortion ban if it landed on her desk.

Read on for highlights from NBC’s article:

NBC News: Nikki Haley’s history on abortion policy includes backing strict bans in S.C.

 • Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has worked on the campaign trail to strike a balance between declaring herself “unapologetically pro-life” and advocating for finding national consensus on abortion access.

 • Haley has cast that as an appropriate and necessary emphasis for someone running for president of a tightly divided nation. But it is a sharp shift from what she emphasized not only as South Carolina’s governor but, before that, as a state legislator.

 • Haley has cast that as an appropriate and necessary emphasis for someone running for president of a tightly divided nation. But it is a sharp shift from what she emphasized not only as South Carolina’s governor but, before that, as a state legislator.

 • During her time in the state House of Representatives from 2004 to 2010, Haley backed two “right to life” bills that would have significantly limited abortion access statewide, although neither bill ultimately became law.

 • In 2010, Haley co-sponsored a bill proposing that life begins at fertilization, with due process and equal protection both applying to embryos, essentially imposing a complete ban on abortion. The bill, which died in committee, did not include any exceptions — not for rape, incest or the life and health of the mother.

 • And in 2005, Haley voted in favor of another bill that made a similar due process and equal protection proposal beginning at fertilization, but included an exception for rape victims taking a morning-after pill.
